Overview
Beam line 8-2 can be used to probe a wide range of core levels using photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopies. It is equipped with a general-purpose end-station offering a high throughput setup for soft x-ray spectroscopy measurement. BL8-2 has been optimized for seamless sample positioning and the ability to measure across many different energies, consecutively, rendering it particularly useful for characterizing large numbers of samples with multiple elements such as energy storage materials or catalysts. To that end, sample sticks are available for mounting at the home institution, e.g., in a glove bag, and air-free transfer into the main chamber is the default procedure. Due to the standardization of sample labeling, positioning as well as the main spectroscopic acquisition into strictly formatted queues, most of the data collection can be scripted in advance, allowing for the highest possible degree of efficiency. Data acquisition and on-line monitoring takes place via remote access to a PC from where queues and quick plotting can take place. XAS and XPS can be combined in the same experiment.
