Speaker: Jon Marangos, Imperial College London
Program Description:
In this talk I will address two topics: (1) recent research within our group on attosecond, (2) an overview of the current status of the UK X-ray FEL project science case and an outline concept facility design.
I will first address the motivation for making attosecond measurements using soft X-ray spectroscopy with high harmonic generation (HHG). This will be illustrated with recent results from our laboratory that are investigating exciton dynamics in organic semiconductors using X-ray probes. Other recent work in our laboratory on the nature of HHG in liquid samples will also be reported. I will then address the UK XFEL project and outline the process we are going through to develop a science case and grow the XFEL user community in the UK. The science motivation for developing a UK based X-ray FEL will be examined and some of the key requirements defined. An outline design of a potential XFEL facility that can provide these requirements will be presented.
