The present status of the construction of the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser in Hamburg will be reviewed, and challenges in the development of the instrumentation, in order to exploit the time-structure of the superconducting linear accelerator, will be described. Programs for development of imaging detectors, of instruments and of the ancillary facilities, with involvement of external laboratories and institutes in Europe, shall also be described.
