Photonic Computing – Using light to surpass electronics

Wednesday, July 24, 2019 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm

Speaker:  Lucas Zipp, SRI International

Program Description:

The concept of optical or photonic computing is an old one, and one which has been consistently overshadowed by the success of digital electronics and Moore’s Law. However, recent advances in photonic integrated circuit technology has led to a resurgence of interest in photonic computing. I will discuss several new programs in the area of photonic computing and why the time might be right for photonic computing to become a reality. I will also briefly discuss some of our work in the area of engineered optical metasurfaces.
