Poster Session

Poster Abstract Submissions - Due October 9

Users are invited to display posters highlighting research activities conducted over the past year at SSRL. Posters will be displayed throughout the meeting and will be highlighted during a poster session and reception on Thursday, October 19. Graduate students submitting posters must also register for the Users' Meeting and are eligible for one of four poster prizes. All posters require submission of the poster abstract form via the web no later than October 9.

Each author will be assigned a 48" x 48" foam board on which diagrams, graphs, data, pictures and a small amount of text may be mounted. The foam board will be mounted on an easel. Each author will be expected to remain with his/her poster presentation throughout the poster session on Thursday afternoon.

GRADUATE POSTER PRIZES
Graduate students may compete for poster prizes in four scientific categories:

  • Materials Science
  • Environmental Science
  • Macromolecular Crystallography
  • Biological Spectroscopy
(Note: Students must have either a US social security number or a tax identification number prior to the event to be eligible for the cash award.)

The SSRL Users' Executive Committee will judge posters during the poster session reception. Prizes include a monetary award and a ribbon and will be awarded during the Meeting Dinner, Thursday, October 19. All graduate students participating in this session must indicate such on the poster abstract submission form. All non-US citizen graduate students participating should be sure to complete all applicable paperwork prior to coming to SSRL. Contact Lisa Dunn for more information.

LOCATION
The poster session will be located just steps away from the main auditorium and the vendor display area. Assigned poster number (corresponding to easels in the display area) will be provided at the registration check-in desk.

SCHEDULE
Posters may be set up as early as 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 18. All authors are expected to remain with their posters for the poster session reception on Thursday afternoon. Posters may remain up throughout the meeting, but authors are responsible for retrieving their posters no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 20.

POSTER AREA DESCRIPTION
Poster materials will be displayed on a 48" x 48" white foam board on which diagrams, graphs, data, pictures and a small amount of text may be mounted. Thumbtacks will be provided for mounting materials. No audiovisual equipment is available. Poster authors may make preprints of their papers available to participants.

PREPARATION TIPS
Posters be prepared should be easily understood in the absence of the author(s). The content of each poster should be clearly divided into sections including introduction, problem definition (or aim of work), work summary, results, and conclusions.

General guidelines are:

  1. Legibility: The poster should be readable from a distance of at least 5'. Suggested sizes are a minimum graph size of 10" (25 cm), section heading letters of 3/4" (2 cm), and text and figure lettering not less than 3/8" (1 cm).
  2. Heading: A heading label including the title, author name(s), and the primary author(s) address should be included. The recommended lettering size is 1-3/16" (3 cm). This should be mounted at the top of the poster board.
  3. Titles: All figures and tables should be titled.
  4. Dimensions: The entire size of the poster material(s) is limited to the dimension (48" x 48") of the poster board provided by SSRL.
