Accelerator Projects

- R. Boyce

The 1996 SSRL shutdown will be of short duration in order to prepare our facilities for user beam by the 4th of November 1996. During this two- month period the SSRL Accelerator activities will focus on a myriad of maintenance tasks and implementation of a few major projects.

The SSRL Linac and Booster systems require minimal activities during this down period i.e. -the major tasks being replacement of all vacuum isolation valves on the booster to eliminate the problematic sticking valves and installation of new LCW flow switches on each girder section.

SPEAR work will include the installation of new power supplies for the Q2 magnet string and for two quadrupoles on the injection line into SPEAR (BTS). The past operation cycle proved the success of the No-Q3 lattice (the entire run was done with the Q3 magnets installed, but off, and Q2 powered at ~20% of its previous operating level). This down time will see the removal of the old Q2 AC distribution, a 4,160 volt system, in favor of a new smaller 480 volt distribution and power supplies.

New cables will be installed from each e-beam position monitor to four locations around the ring. Located at each of these four positions will be a new microprocessor. It is anticipated that this new parallel beam processor system will be commissioned during the FY97 operation cycle.

Preparation for the Beam Line 11 Wiggler installation will be done this year. A new foundation will be poured and relocation of an alignment monument will facilitate the wiggler installation in FY97. Installation of the final two RF shielded VAT valves will be done, completing the vacuum valve replacement program for SPEAR. We are beginning a beam line front end vacuum valve replacement program, and two VAT valves will be installed on Beam Lines 3 and 4. Finally, completion of the SPEAR MPS phase II will occur in September. This will include all magnet thermal switches, isolation valve operation, and power supplies into the machine protection system.
