SPANISH WALTZ "Dances of Early California" (From Los Angeles, but music from Pacific Grove. Also done to "Sobra Las Olas" ("Over the Waves).) 8x tune = 1x dance. Maybe do twice? Can be done in either Sicilian Circle formation or as a scatter "find another couple"; when you find one, stand about four feet off from the other couple, woman on the right of her partner. Join hands in front, left with left, right with right, left arms above. ("Skater's Waltz.") INTRO 1-32: In closed position, waltz around the room, finish facing another couple in skater's waltz position. FIGURES: I WOMAN CIRCLE PARTNER 1-4: Let go right hands, keep left; she circles CCW around him in four waltz steps while he does waltz balances, starting left. As she goes, she does one complete turn left under the joined arms, starting with second waltz step. WOMAN CROSSES OVER 5-8: Keeping hold of left hands, woman take right hands with opposite man. Arms are raised; two women change places under raised arms, passing left shoulders and turning to the left. Lower the arms. ALL CIRCLE LEFT 9-16: In this cloverleafy circle, circle clockwise (left) with eight small waltz steps. CHANGE THE STAR 17-18: Raise the arms; women, turning to their right, return to original positions by own partners with the waltz steps. 19-20: Men turn once in place under raised arms to own left, with two waltz steps. 21-24: Women change places as in 5-8. ALL CIRCLE RIGHT 25-32: In this new star formation, circle right with eight waltz steps. ALL WALTZ 1-32: With partner, waltz around for 32 bars, returning to same couple and same place. (Go wherever works, depending on the room and the circumstances.) FIGURE II BALANCE IN PLACE 1-4: Take left hands in front, right hands behind (courtesy turn position, or back-cross-grasp.) Take four waltz balance steps, starting left. (Note that man takes 16 waltz balance steps in a row.) WOMAN CHANGES TO PARTNER'S LEFT 5-8: With hands still joined, women with four waltz steps turns right and passes in back of partner finishing at his left side, while he takes four waltz balance steps starting left. BALANCE IN PLACE 9-12: Both take four waltz balance steps starting left. WOMAN RETURNS TO PARTNERS RIGHT 13-16: Women with four waltz steps turn left and cross behind partner returning to his right side, while he takes four waltz balance steps starting left. WHEEL LEFT AND RIGHT 17-24: Shoulder/waist hold: Man places right hand at right side of woman's waist; she places right hand on his right hand and left hand on his right shoulder; he places his left hand on her left hand. Both start left foot to make one complete turn in place CCW; finish with two waltz steps in place. 25-32: Keep that hold, turn clockwise. Man drops right hand and keeping woman's left in his left hand turns her to the right under raised left arms to face him; take closed waltz position. ALL WALTZ 1-32: Waltz around the room, returning to same place and couple. FIGURE III 1-32: Repeat Figure II (Balance, other side, Balance, other side, wheel) ALL WALTZ WITH OPPOSITES Just before the long waltz, man turns partner to the right to face opposite instead of of left to face him. 1-32: Waltz around the room, returning to same place and couple. FIGURE IV WOMAN CIRCLES PARTNER 1-4: Just like Figure I; she orbits him holding left hand. WOMEN CIRCLE MEN AND WALTZ ROUND 5-32: Keep hold of that left hand. Men reach diagonally across to take right hand and kneel on left knee, still holding left hand and keeping it high, and above the right hand. Women, holding skirts with right hands (and probably fluttering them to show the pretty petticoats), make most of a circle CCW, in eight waltz steps. When they get opposite partner, men stand and waltz away with original partner. Let's say we repeat once.
