VALLEY OF THE MOONLIGHT David Newitt, 2005 Tune (3/4 time) by Sherri Sallis, 2003. Three-couple longways set, TWOS IMPROPER Teacher's note: "Main challenge teaching (but not tough to dance) is obviously the first B part "half heys." The 2s track is just a big loop over the right shoulder, during which they can pretty much keep eye contact the whole time. The supporting couples dance the track of a 1/2 hey, but must all dance in towards the center of the dance on bar 8 so they end almost back to back with the other supporting couple (1's facing up, 3's down). I like to think of bar 8 as the supporting couples being the jaws of a trap, closing on the 2s, who escape in the nick of time by falling back to form the circles of 3. Part I ------- A 1-4: All step L and honor partner, turn single R, into ... 5-12: Circle six hands around to the left, and back to the right, re-forming the set. 13-16: All turn single and set to partner. B 1-4: 2nd couple (IMPROPER!) turn by the right hand 1.75 times round, ending with 2nd man dancing out the bottom of the set, woman out the top. 5-8: "Half Heys with a twist": 2nd man with the 3s, 2nd woman with the 1s, begin half heys for 3 across the dance passing right shoulders with 3d man and 1st woman respectively. On bar 7 the 2s come into the middle to face eacah other up and down the dance (man above, woman below; passing right shoulders) and fall back on bar 8: 2nd man up through the 1s, 2nd woman down through the 3s, 1s and 3s finish the half heys improper, in the center of the set with partner taking hands 3: 1s below M2 facing up, 3s above W2 facing down. 9-12: Circle 3 hands round to the left, 2nd man with the 1s, 2nd woman with the 3s. On bar 12 the 2s let go with left hands to lead their circles out toward original places, and taking hands all around. 13-16: Circle 6 hands round TWO places more; face new partner and turn single. Part II -------- A 1-8: Partners left shoulder swirl siding; set,, and turn single. 9-16: Partners RIGHT shoulder swirl siding, set, and turn single. B 1-16: As above, from new places. Part III ---------- A 1-8: Partners turn right hand once round, set, and turn single. 9-16: Partners turn LEFT hand, set, and turn single. B 1-16: As above, from new places. (Repeat all three parts, if desired). CODA ---- Repeat Part 1A, finishing with step and honor partner on bars 15-16. Notes: All turn singles are to the right. Order after each progression is M3 W2 W3 M1 M2 W1 3> Br-7 is a continuous "loop" over the R shoulder for the 2nd couple.
