The dance is, indeed, the Chinese Fan.  I collected it in the early 80s and
have been calling it ever since.  I don't know the origin of it, but if I
remember correctly, I got it out of one of my old books.  It's a bit of a
challenge, so don't do it late at night when folks are brain-saturated.
Works great at dance camps.  Timing is critical during the fan portion, much
like the chains of Rod's Quad #2.  I've also used just the main fan figure
as a filler.  Enjoy.

Head Couples Pass Thru, Separate, Go 'Round 1

Pass Thru, Separate, Go 'Round 1

Pass Thru, Separate, Go 'Round 1

Pass Thru, Allemande Left Corner, Swing Partner.

 

Figure

Gents to Center w/Left Hand Star.  Go 'Round Once &

Don't be slow.  Pick Up Partner by Your Rt Elbow.

Head* Ladies Turn Back & Hook the Sides* (w/Rt Elbow)

Give them a Flip.  Both Turn Back to Your Opposites.

(Star Keeps Turning)

Head Ladies Turn Back & Do It Again.

Hook & Flip back to the Men.

Gents Back Out with a 1 1/2 Spin.

Rough Side Out, Smooth Side In.

Ladies Form that Rt Hand Star.

Head* Gents if You can, Turn Rt Back in a Chinese Fan.

Hook the Sides, Give 'em a Flip.  Both go Back to Opp.

Turn Back & Hook 'em one more time.

Flip to Your Partners, then Star Prom. Home & Swing.

Subject: [trad-dance-callers] need name of dance

 

I was at a vintage dance recently and there was one dance that really
intrigued me, but I can't seem to find the steps for it.
It started out in a quadrille formation and featured some balances,
Ladies' Chains, etc. Then the gents did a left-hand star, and this is
where things got interesting. On the first rotation, the gents did a
left-hand star - gents only. On the second pass, the gents picked up
their partners ("Star Promenade"?) and continued doing the LH Star. 
Shortly after this, the head ladies let go of their partners,
turned to their right, and picked up the lady that was behind them. 
Now each head lady is doing a RH turn with her corresponding side
lady. During this turn, the head lady meets up with the other head
gentleman (still doing the LH Star), with whom she connects. Each side
lady continues the turn and connects with the other side gent. It is
difficult to explain, but is surprisingly easy for beginners to get. 
I just wish I knew the name of the dance! Any comments and/or ideas
would be appreciated.
