SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO HEEL AND TOE POLKA Eight-bar sequence, headed "Polka" 1: Place the first foot heel to the side (1); touch the toe of that foot in front of the other toe (2). 2: Hop on second foot; take one polka step toward the first foot 3-4: Repeat 1-2 starting other foot. 5-8: Four turning polka steps progressing forward; remember to hop! VARIANT FROM NORTHERN CALIFORNIA OLD-TIME DANCE 1-4: As above 5-6: Slide, Slide, Slide, step (taking weight, freeing second foot) 7-8: Slide, slide, slide, step (taking weight, freeing first foot) ["Three-slide Esmerelda."] -------------------------------------------------------------------- SANTA BARBARA HEEL AND TOE POLKA 16-bar sequence; use "Heel and Toe Polka" or "Jenny Lind Polka" 1: Touch TOE of first foot to the side, extending ankle (1); Touch HEEL in same place (2). 2: Hop on second foot, bringing free foot in toward the supporting foot, with toe pointed down and heel forward as seen from the front (and); starts polka step (1 and 2). [Alan sez: tilt your body toward that free foot so that you start to fall in the right direction. This'll look just like period illustrations.] 3-4: Same thing starting on other foot. 5-8: 1-4 over again. 9-14: Six turning polka steps turning CW but progressing CCW around room (eg, perfectly normal.) 15-16: Slide, slide, slide, hold (freeing first foot.) Repeat ad lib; I wouldn't go more than eight times. --------------------------------------------------------------------- MONTEREY: HEEL AND TOE POLKA IN JIG TIME (Might not actually have been an old dance; history unverified. Fun, though.) Can use "Irish Washerwoman" other jigs; 16-bar sequence, so play AB. Closed couple position. 1: Touch heel of first foot directly to that side (1); bring toe of the same foot to side of the supporting foot, lightly touching floor (2). A light hop may be taken on those touches. 2: Take 1 polka step directly sideward. 3-4: As above, starting other foot. 5: On first foot, take two slides directly sideways. 6: Stamp first foot (1), second foot (and), left (2). 7-8: As in 5-6, but on other foot. 9-15: Seven turning polka steps, moving freely over the floor. 16: Starting second foot (the free one), stamp (1), stamp first (and), stamp second (2). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
