PLAYING (IN) THE FIELD 4-couple square, Gary Roodman, "Prime Calculated Figures" NIB, tune "Entree" by George F. Handel, Key: Cm, Meter: Cut Time, 88 bpm 4x (ABC), 10-bar A, 12-bar B, 10-bar C. A 1-4: Hands eight, circle L EXACTLY halfway around SUPER-GYPSY (like "Bare Necessities") 5-8: Partners liesurely gypsy almost once round AND 9-10: Men, coming round in the gypsy, catch corner's eye, perhaps hesitate, then loop out in corner's partner's former palce WHILE women move to the center, stand back-to-back for an instant, then turn right back to original places. B 1-4: INTRODUCTION TO NEW PARTNER Each man in turn counting CCW, starting with man now at head, step into the center of the set, facing current partner. (At end, all four men have back to the center; women adjust so there are two straight lines of four crossing in the center.) 5-12: HEYS FOR FOUR THROUGH THE CENTER All pass partner right WOMEN left hand star halfway in the middle WHILE MEN loop wide right on the outside. All pass original opposite right MEN left hand star halfway in the middle WHILE WOMEN loop wide right on the outside All pass partner right (both now crossed over); WOMEN left-hand star halfway in the middle and stay facing the way the star puts you (CCW) WHILE MEN loop R on the outside; end facing CCW around the square, ready to receive the opposite person with L hand (all face CCW). C 1-2: SQUARE LEADS With this person, lead straight out along the side of the square (not around the circle, but to the corner of the square). 3-4: Face this person, take two hands, WOMEN draw MEN to new positions halfway down the sides of the set ("heads" and "sides" have swapped). 5-8: GRAND SQUARE (halfway) Current heads lead to the center, meet partner, turn 1/4 to fall back to the sides with partner WHILE Current sides fall back from each other (just push off), turn to face partner, and meet in head positions. 9-10: All turn two hands halfway with partner, opening facing in with women on the right (per normal). TEACHING POINTS (1) Practice timing of gypsy and progression in A 9-10 with msic (2) The pace in B 5-8 is deliberate without rushing - 6 passes of 8 two-beat bars. Notice that the women go across the set and come back, while the men go across and stay there. (3) Orientation at end of B music: Before teaching the dance, have everyone change places with partner and then wheel as a couple 1/4 turn to the right, so that they are standing like spokes of a wheel facing ccw around the square.
