THE HARVARD "Round Dances" M. Gilbert 1890 (LoC Website) 8-bar schottische sequence. (By permission of Jacob Mahler and Balmer & Weber. Dance composed by "the late Prof. Vegas of New Orleans" Position: closed couple Gilbert says: First bar: 1: long slide backward on left for man (forward on right for woman) 2: draw right to left (NOT TAKING WEIGHT) bars 2-4: rotating schottische step-hops (waltz-galop) starting with M going forward on RIGHT (!) 5-8: Repeat starting back on right foot; now the turn in the waltz-galop is to the left. "The long slide is called the Harvard. The lady always make the Harvard forward. Never Harvard with the same foot twice in succession. Each time you Harvard the direction of the waltz-galop is reversed. A slight spring before making the Harvard improves the dance."
