The first wave is formed by the 1's taking R hands with their partner and L hands with a shadow. In the second wave it is L to partner and R to a second shadow. While the active role is as good as contra dancing gets, the extended inactivity for the 2's has unfortunately made this dance less popular among modern contra dancers.
