Cobbler's Hornpipe Set Dance Jenny Beer, 2008 three-couple longways, Key: Dm, Meter: 3/2 Barnes I ("Mr. Englefields's New Hornpipe") A1: 1s and 2s turn partners two hands once round, then short CW half poussette (1st corners going forward) A2: 1s and 3s the same; turn partners two hands once round, then short CW half poussette (1st corners push) B1: 1-2: Circle 6 halfway, middle couple (3s) pulling in to form lines. (brisk!) 3: Lines fall back for 3 steps, 4: come forward for 3 and on the last of those pass partner right shoulder while turning to face back ("flip") so all are proper facing partner. B2: 1: lines fall back with hands 2: come forward 3-4: 1s at the top cast off one place, 3s (in middle) lead up, 2s stand still. (Now 3-1-2) A1: Pass & turn: 1st couple in middle place pass by the R shoulder, change places with their 1st corners [that is curve right to loop around the corner spot while the corners come forward along the diagonal] Those corners turn R in centerWHILE 1st couple continue loop [cutting through the center from the end of the set to finish in middle place proper]to face in, passing original corners who move out to place. 1st couple pass R shoulder to face 2nd corners. A2 Repeat figure with 2nd corners, 1st couple give R hands to cross to own side. B1&2 Repeat previous B1 and B2, 1st couple in the middle casting to the bottom, 3rd couple leading up, and 2nd couple turning single R (or standing still). Advanced version: Once dancers are accustomed to the pass & turn figure, 1s pass R shoulder each time instead of giving R hands. Pass & turn is a Scottish dance figure invented by Claudette Sigg in the dance Moment of Truth. Tune: 3/2 Dm, Cobbler's Hornpipe (see Mr. Englefield's Hornpipe in Barnes I) JoAnn says 96 is slow, 112 is fast. Alan's observation: DEMO DEMO DEMO Bruce's Teaching notes: Teaching notes: A large part of the point in this dance is getting everyone close to partner at the end of "pulling in to form lines" It's probably clearer to prompt the progressions in each B2 as "tops cast" and "middles cast" I hope to do this fast enough that the timing will necessarily be fluid, but those wanting guidance can do the corners part in Corners Pass and Turn as follows: 1st corners wait 1 bar while 1s pass each other, then time the next 3 bars so that they approach the 1s when the 1s approach them. 2nd corners approach the 1s when the 1s approach them (should be the start of bar 5), etc., and stand still on bar 8 while the 1s cross to home.
