I use that figure in one of my dances as follows:

Wheel Of Fortune
Formation: Circle

A1: In to the middle & back twice
A2: Balance & Right hand turn partner, then balance & left hand turn
neighbour
B1: Reel of 3 with partner and neighbour
B2: Grand chain to number 7

I describe the reel of 3 as a right hand turn with partner, followed by left
hand turn with neighbour - but done without hands!  The fact that the
balance and turns appear in A2 gives people a chance to work out who they
are dancing with, and considerably lessens the risk of people going
wandering around the set.  The figure looks really nice from the stage.

I often use this dance as a starting dance when I am confident in the
ability of the dancers - ie when calling for a dance club etc.  It usually
works quite well as it is simply enough to do, but with enough in it to wake
the brain up.
The new intake at Exeter Uni managed it without problem - and they are
novices.

Somewhere in Sussex yesterday, the caller called for overlapping reels
of three. Everybody in a single one-deep circle, men facing women as if
about to perform a grand chain. The caller asked us to perform reels of
three. The stated intention was for each couple to pass right shoulders,
and then, I think, the woman to go round the man from the next couple.
After much laughter and some frustration, the dance was modified to
become a totally different dance, devoid of any attempt at a reel.

Questions:

Any idea if this was in fact possible? My intuitive feeling is that it
isn't. I may well play with diagrams to explore the idea, but somebody
else may already know.

No idea what the music would have been - abandoned at walk-through
stage.

Given that the caller had presumably or perhaps seen something like it
that did work, any idea what? Any known such dance?

Overlapping reels of four sounds mildly surreal, but I'm not
pre-judging.
