If I am calling a longways for 4/5/6 couples dance, it is often easier to
get people up in sets across the room, than trying to divide long lines.
Depending, of course, on the size and shape of the dance space. Beginners
are prone to set drift e.g. after a cast to the bottom and arch, with the
top set becoming bigger, the rest more cramped. Having just one set across
avoids this. Then if the room is wider and I need 2 sets of 4 across the
room for e.g. Barley reel, I tell the couple nearest the centre that they
are 1s, if any of them know they are improper they don't say.

 

Barley reel (48 bars or unphrased for beginners or longer sets)

F&B cross over, F&B cross back, 1s strip the willow and arch at bottom,
others cast down, up under arch, swing .
