A NEW YEAR (APW 10/21/2004, to premiere 12/31/2004) Longways duple minor improper (or Sicilian circle) Waltz (3/4) time - "Flatbush Waltz". http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/~winston/mydances/apw/flatbush_waltz.pdf A1: All face neighbor and put the hand near partner in for a hands-across star. (This means first corners (W) are left hand, second corners (M) are right hand.) 1-4: Men go forward, women back, turning the star once round. 5-6: With the one you're facing (opposite sex neighbor), right-shoulder Hole-in-the-Wall cross (on the line) to change places; 7-8: right shoulder turn single and a bit to finish facing partner. A2: Facing partner, put in the same hand as before. 1-4: Women go forward, men go back, turning the star once round. 5-6: With the one you're facing (partner), leftt shoulder hole-in-the-wall cross; 7-8: left shoulder turn single, finish taking two hands with partner. [All progressed; 1s proper, 2s improper.] B1: 1-4: CCW Women draw half draw poussette to get everyone home, blending into 5-8: "sliding doors": simultaneous "Mad Robin" figure, with the women going outside first and the men going inside first. (That's walk the track of a left shoulder gypsy with neighbor, but keep your eyes on your partner.) B2: 1-4: CCW (women back, men forward) half _regular_ poussette to get everyone progressed and in original degree of properness. 5-8: Partners (still holding two hands) balance forward and back, then let go man's left, woman's right, and turn the woman in place under man's right and finish facing next neighbor, ready to bring joined hands forward into the next star. (Note: 5-8 was originally "two hands once round, open up facing next couple.") Thanks to Jon Berger for suggesting "Flatbush Waltz". Thanks to Mary Luckhardt for finding the turn singles in A1&2.) ------------------------------------------------------------------ ABBESSES Alan Winston, 1996/1997 Three-couple longways [Version with James Langdell's music from Wilson - yes, 28-bar] http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/~winston/mydances/apw/abbesses.pdf A1: 1-4: 1s cast to center of set 5-8: Right hand stars at right hand ends of set. A2: 1-4: 1s leave the stars and catch the other 1 with a right hand at the waist. Go around, using Wilson's Regency waltz if you know it. 5-8: 1s join left hands over head and continue around. Finish proper. B1: 1-8: "Trip to Tunbridge"-style contra corners WITH HANDS; 1s pass right shoulders (no hands), turn first corner right hand, pass partner right shoulder, turn second corner right hand 9-12: 1s cross to proper sides and cast to the bottom, threes moving up. ------------------------------------------------------------------ ANGELINE THE BAKER tune of the same name Alan Winston longways duple minor proper 10/12/2017 A1: 1-4: All four right shoulder clump cross (two double steps to hole in the wall diagonally) 5-8: catch hands and circle left A2: 1-4: All four LEFT shoulder clump cross 5-8: catch hands and circle right B1: 1-2: (Gents drop hands) M1 draw out into a line of four facing down M1 L1 L2 M2 3-4: Line leads down a double 5-6: ladies let go hands, partners slide across together (2s in front, ladies in lead) All face up, join hands in line again (L2 M2 M1 L1) and 7-8: L2 draws the line back toward a circle (or squarish U), going up and across so that you end M2 L2 M1 L1 [Note: Absolutely vital that couple 1 slide across vigorously so that M1 is just about on the set line and L1 is outside it so that there's someplace to be drawn to in 7-8; otherwise this falls flat.] B2: 1-4: Partners two-hand-turn (they've already got one hand) 5-8: neighbors with inside hands, fall back and come forward ------------------------------------------------------------------ BAGGAGE Alan Winston longways duple minor (optionally improper) 4/27/2010 (but thinking about it for a year) http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/~winston/mydances/apw/baggage.pdf Tune Debbie Jackson Meter 2/4 Key Dm A1: 1-2: partners forward into line, rsh to rsh; 3-4: pull left shoulder back and cast to place 5-8: neighbors left hand turn , finish facing neigborh A2: 1-2: neigbors forward into line, lsh to lsh 3-4: pull rigt should back and cast to place 5-8: partners right hand turn, finish facing in B1: 1-2: second corners (gents) cross 3-4: first corners (ladies) cross 5-6: circle half 7-8: 1s cast off; 2s lead up _INTO_ B2: 1-8: 1s cross up, 2s cast off to start whole figure 8; finish progressed, and with original propriety, and ready to start again. ---------------------------- A BELLE MEAD GARDEN first draft 3-10-2015, delivered 8-19-2015 Tune "My Love on the Stair", Patti Cobb 32-bar waltz-time; slow Longways duple minor proper Challenging dance, A music faces disbelief from dancers] A: 1-2: Neighbors face. Each person is on the corner of a square set. ("This is your spot. It's your friend; get to know it, you'll be going back to it a lot.) (In a double) A1: 1-2: Partners curve in to meet neighbors (take hands at about beat four) 3-4: Cast away from partner (M L, W R) back to place facing partner 5-8: LEFT shoulder gypsy partner, finish facing partner A2: 1-2: Neighbors lead in to meet partners 3-4: Cast away from neighbor back to place facing neighbor 5-8 RIGHT shoulder gypsy neighbor, finish facing in to set. B1: 1-2: women change places (diagonally) Hole in the Wall/Well-Hall style, finishing fairly close 3-4: men change places (diagonally) passing right shoulder, catching rhand 5-8: all four right-hand-star once round (women start right foot, men left) B2: 1-8: move into closed waltz position with partner and go round the other couple 1.5 CCW, finishing at home, facing partner. (Siding) A1: 1-2: Partners meet, right shoulder to right shoulder 3-4: Cast away from partner (that is, cast left) back to place 5-8: Partners LEFT shoulder gypsy, finish facing neighbor A2: 1-2: Neighbors meet, left shoulder to left shoulder 3-4: Cast away from neighbor (that is, cast right) back to place 5-8: Neighbors RIGHT shoulder gypsy, finish facing in to set B1&2 as above (Arming) A1: 1-2: Partners right hand turn halfway finishing facing partner 3-4: Cast left back to place 5-8: Gypsy partner LEFT shoulder, finish facing neighbor A2: 1-2: Neighbors left hand turn halfway finishing facing neighbor 3-4: Cast right back to place (getns can loop past each other inside the set) 5-8: Neighbors gypsy RIGHT shoulder B1&2 as above NOTE: Closing the first two bars of A, bring your feet together so that you're prepared to turn away without a radical surprise. Teaching notes: Emphasize who you cast away from (whoever you've been working with). Perhaps rough in the general structure and then refine rather than telling people too much at once. (But when you get into how the lead in works, note that each person walks around a circle in the course of the lead in). May need to emphasize anticipation of the corner cross so that ladies elongate the gypsy enough to not have to wait to cross. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- COBBLESTONES longways duple minor, improper, 32-bar moderate waltz; we've been using "Seamus O'Brien" 02/04/2011 REVISED (new A2) 07/12/2011 REVISED (new A1, A2, reshuffling Bs) 8/21/2014 REVISED (new B1-8) 9/22/2014 Tested revision at Woodshed 10/14. Good. A 1-4: Facing neighbor, holding inside hands with partner, waltz balance out and in; turn single toward neighbor and finish facing partner. 5-8: Taking near hand with neighbor, waltz balance out and in, turn single toward partner; W1 finishes short of her place, on a diagonal line between the two gents; all three take hands along the line facing W2 9-12: Line of three raises arches; they go forward and back while W2 orbits W1, going forward the whole time; both women retire to place, setting up ... 13-16: All four circle left all the way; finish with a line of three with M1 in the middle and M2 facing him at home. B 1-4: Line of three raises arches; they go forward and back while M2 orbits M1, going forward the whole time; both men retire to place, setting up ... 5-8: All four circle left all the way, into 9-12: Half poussette CW 13-16: Partners turn two hands and open facing new neighbors. NOTE: IF there are height challenges with the arches feel free to let go as necessary. (Draw bridges.) -------------------------------------------------------------- FESTINA LENTE Three-couple longways / triple minor option Tune: Evit Gabriel https://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/~winston/mydances/apw/evit_gabriel.jpg 8 April 2019 / Tested 9 April A1: 1-4: 1s cross right shoulder, 2s move up as 1s continue down the outside to second place, 1s brisk cross rsh and flip (Well Hall / Hole in the Wall ) to fall back, picking up neighbors ... 5-8: Lines of three fall back and come forward, 1s hanging back a little to make it round A2: 1-4: brisk walking circle six left once round 5-8: and back to the right B1: Corner/Partner contra corners (left hand on right diagonal, right to partner, left to second corner, right to partner to own side and release to go wide into ... B2: 1-4: 1s expansive right shoulder round, spiraling in a little bit to 5-8: 1s traveling two hand turn down the middle as 3s cast up and come together [For triple minor, replace B2 with 1-4: 1s going to their own lefts, half-figure eight (splitting an end couple, going around 2nd corner) to finish improper in middle place 5-8: Partners two hand turn until proper [or 1s may choose to alternate roles] Teaching points: The circle works better walking than slipping to flow into the contra corners. 2nd corner people can be really helpful in facilitating the entry into the contra corners by holding on to their active person's right hand a fraction of a second longer and backing up as though starting a gate; this gets the actives going in the right direction with the correct (left) hand free. In the transition from one round to the next, the 3s (becoming 2s) can have a nice path by casting wide up to 2nd place, arriving just in time to lead up to 1st place at bar 2 of A1 as the new 1s cast. Notes: - Thanks to David Graves for the title ("make haste slowly"). Despite the driving urgency of the tune the dance works nicely with a walking step, no need to rush. - Heard "Evit Gabriel" (a great contra dance tune) at Epicenter contra weekend in Mill Valley, then several more times while trying to program a contra dance. I'd been asked to call a contra corners dance there and to have a triplet ready as backup, and this is what my brain poppped out. Not at all useful for the contra - wrong kind of contra corners, no swings, but a pretty nice little dance for English dancers. --------------------------------------- THE FIDDLER'S WIFE Longways duple minor - IMPROPER (if you care) Commission from Jon Berger, who wanted a dance he could dance with his wife Jon has written a tune. A1: 1-2: first corners (women) set forward to each other 3-4: and turn single back through place INTO 5-8: neighbors right shoulder gypsy up and down the line A2: 1-2: second corners (men) set forward LEFT AND RIGHT to each other 3-4: and turn single LEFT SHOULDER back to place and into 5-8: LEFT SHOULDER gypsy with partner across the set (and keep moving) INTO B1: 1-4: single file circle TO THE RIGHT 1/2 way around. (Make it square, and mark the corner clearly - six footfalls per side.) [Sharon suggests Fried-esque 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-- 1-- but I really hate that; I want flow.] Leaves women facing out, partners directly behind them. [propriety reversed] 5-8: (half) Poussette variation: Still facing this same way, lead diagonally out and sideways for two; both flip and go forward into place [Everyone's now unprogressed but relatively improper] Keep moving the same way into ... B2: 1-4: Simultaneous sliding doors/mad robin - women through the middle first, orbit neighbor (round left shoulder) while looking at partner; go back to this place without facing your partner. 5-8: (half) draw Poussette variation: men in the lead this time - walk the poussette track, as a *DRAW* poussette, to finish progressed and with your original polarity. -------------------------------------- HARTS OF SAN MARCOS for Alan and Cece Hart 5/5/2019 revised 5/14/2019 32-bar moderate tempo waltz dance with 4 bar phrases. "Twin Centers of the Universe" (in Waltz Book II, played AB) is very nice, as is Ellen Tepper's "Nobody Else's Waltz" played AABC, still looking for official tune.) A1: 1-4: First corners rh all the way WHILE 2d corners orbit halfway CCW 5-8: 2nd corners Lh all the way WHILE 1st corners orbit halfway CW A2: 1-8: (All now in corners place) Repeat above to home (So you just keep going in the same direction for 16 bars, coming in close to corner or going far away; try to spot on corner) IMPORTANT STYLING NOTE about the As When doing hand turns, use three walz steps to get most of the way around, then consciously let go and retreat to the sideline so that you definitely end up on the corner of the set you started the turn on. When orbiting, consciously go half way around in four waltz steps; come in to do the hand turn on beat 1 of the next four bars. B1: 1-4: Mirror back to back; gents / left file through the middle first; take hands as you go through middle. (Okay to take hands with neighbor from next set as you fall back on the sides.) 5-8: Circle left once round, letting go and easing out to home place B2: 1-4: Starting partner, two slow changes of rights and lefts with hands 5-8: Partners crossed hand turn 1,5, finishing proper. If you keep hold of left hand you can give it a little tug to launch the correct people into the center or around. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- HEYLOFT Longways duple minor proper Any good jig or reel (but "Blue Jig" or that medlied with "Megajig" is great!) http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/~winston/mydances/apw/megajig.pdf (2nd tune) Alan Winston 2012-07-12 Intended as an easy teaching dance, inspired by a c.1802 dance where the 1s do sequential figure eights through the bottom couple. Turns out that with the right tunes, it's good fun, and makes a decent opener. A1: M1 crosses down to start hey for 3 with 2s, giving left shoulder to W2; all finish at home A2: W1 crosses down to start hey for 3 with 2s, giving right shoulder to M2; all finish at home B1: 1s down the middle and back and cast off B2: Whole pousette CCW (which should flow nicely into the hey with new couple) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- LARK TRIO Three people abreast facing up Tune: Bare Necessities Latk Camp, 2016 A1: 1-2: Lead up 3-4: Fall back 5-6: Middle person raises right hand; ends swap with left-hand end going under the arch. (Right hand high, left hand low) 7-8: All facing down, set right and left in waltz time A2: 1-2: Lead down 3-4: Fall back 5-6: Right hand high, left hand low 7-8: Fold into a ring with middle facing up B1: 1-2: Balance the ring (forward and back) 3-4: Ends face up and switch hands, balance f&b in a wavy line 5-6: Those holding right hands, turn right hands halfway 7-8: new middle and other end, left hand turn half (putting left hand end in the middle) B2: 1-8: New new middle and new right hand end pass right shoulder to start expansive hey for three; all face up in line for next round. --------------------------------------------- Moonlight Paddle (Rev 4 - probably final - 7/12/2017) Longways Triple Minor, 1s IMPROPER 100 bpm http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/~winston/mydances/apw/moonlight_paddle.pdf Key F, Meter 6/8 A1: 1-2: 1s (IMPROPER!) cross down as 2s step up (or cast up through 540 degrees )to face out and 3s turn to face out; 1s finish in the middle of lines of three facing out 3-4: lines lead out 5-6: right-hand-high, left-hand-low so ends change, all face back in 7-8: lines lead back [now 3-1-2] A2: 1-2: 1s half-gyre right shoulder then pivot to face out in middle of their own line facing out (as above) 3-4: lines of three lead out 5-6: right-hand high, left-hand-low (2-1-3) 7-8: lines lead back, 1s hanging back a little to make a round circle B1: 1-8: circle left and back to the right B2: 1-4: 2s (at top) and 3s (at bottom) chase/orbit as couples all the way around 1s (continuing momentum of circle) WHILE 1s (in middle) LEFT SHOULDER gyre (fairly tight) partners left hand turn; (for the 1s this flows into the cross down to start the next round) ------------- NOTES: at A2, 1s basically have to cross. Half gyre and swivel to face out is fun, but it's also okay to just cross RSH in four steps At B2, which partner is leading in the chase alternates depending on whether you're on top (#2 gent) or bottom (#3 lady) The dance is intended to honor the loping drive of Rebecca's tune and the flow of a river, which may eddy but (absent a bore) never reverses; all movement in the dance is forward, no backing up. This works very nicely Scottish style in a four-couple set, 1s active twice and then to the bottom. As a longways as many as will it can be wearing. ------------------------------------------------------------- NANOTYRANNUS 3/28/2018 (but have been thinking about it for days) longways duple minor Dave Bartley's tune for the dance http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/~winston/mydances/apw/nanotyrannus.pdf Common time - 4 beats per measure 1-2: Circle L halfway, pass through across, remain facing out (progressed and proper) 3: neighbors lead out 4: change hands, lead back 5-6: Partners RH turn 1 7-8: Original foursome right hand star and don't face back in [In each couple, one person is facing out, the other is behind them. The ones facing out are on the 2nd diagonals] Note this spot (progressed and improper); you'll be coming back to it 9-10: Chase around next neighbors [Catch eyes with the person diagonally left from you; the people facing out lead left, partner follows, keep it tight to to get back to this spot] 11-12: Chase around current neigbbors (same people leading, catch eyes with diagonal on right, leaders turn right) 13: 1st corners cross 14: 2nd corners cross (unprogressed but improper) 15-16: Starting with partner, two changes of rights and left (and take hands with next neighbors) ------------------------------------------ Teaching points: - End effects! You think you're out and at bar 9 people want to chase around you. You can either participate in the first chase (finishes where it started!) or stay close together and let the other couple around - CL half and pass through is one unit - Keep the chases tight, maybe do a star, then a no-hands star - You're aiming for that progressed and improper new home spot after each chase - When you change from 1 to 2 the lead in the chase changes; it's whoever's on the second diagonal, and the lead goes left first and back to this spot, then right and back to this spot. Caller note: Not too fast, maybe 102bpm This is relentless perpetual motion; don't run it too long. ------------------------------------------------------------------ NEW DECADE WALTZ 3-couple longways 32-bar waltz (AABB) Suggested tune: Larry Unger's "Alta Sierra Waltz"; waltz book 3, 1st tune, CD "Waltz Time". Composed 2011-01-12 A1: 1-4: Partners gypsy [or maybe right-hand-turn] easing out to face CW into ... 5-8: Chase ("goose march") around the circle halfway A2: 5-8: as above, in the same direction; W1 may optionally catch her partner's eye and cast into ... B1: 1-4: W1 continues CW, with partner following, into 2nd place improper WHILE 2s meet, move up, and turn to face down 5-8: W1 continues CCW, with partner following, into 3d place proper 3s with the same timing meet, move up, and turn to face down B2: 1-8: 1s continue up into parallel straight heys, passing left shoulder with 3s to start (Just emphasize this, because it's a surprise, but it feels good.). NOTE: The 3s are likeliest to be surprised by the start of the hey; they need to be ready to give left shoulders to 1s coming up from the bottom. I suggest warning them that they will need to give left shoulder; with that in mind, it's safe for them to meet, lead up, and turn up to face down; gent will need to turn more than 3/4, lady less than 3/4 to be in the correct orientation. ------------------------------------------------------------------ ROSEMARY'S TURN Patti's Tune "Rosemary" 32-bar waltz (through-composed) Commission for Rosemary Murphree's retirement Commissioned in Hey_Days 2014 auction. https://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/~winston/mydances/apw/Rosemary.pdf 1-4: W1 RH turn M2 5-8: W1 LH turn W2 (to face partner) 9-12: W1 & M1 turn RH 1x and finish close together 13-16: 1s expansive cast down while 2s meet and lead up; all finish in sideline facing partner. progressed. 17-18: Partners turn right hand half; 19-20: then box the gnat back to place (Regency-era allemande) 21-23: W1 & M2 tight RH turn 1.5 while others orbit CCW .5 24: on arrival half gypsy right shoulder with partner to cross to sideline proper and unprogressed 25-28: Partners turn right hand half; then box the gnat back to place 29-31: M1 & W2 RH turn 1.5 while others orbit CW .5 32: and on arrival half gypsy right with partner to own side progressed. NOTES: It may be preferable to convert the "box-the-gnat" in 19-20 and 27-28 into "swat-the-flea" (Left-hand turn under), which avoids the slight awkwardness of using the right hand twice in a row for the people turning corners. In the first half of the dance, there is more time for everything than you think, and dancers must exercise restraint and control to keep the dance flowing. One acceptable variation would be for the 1s, at bar 13, to lead up for one waltz step before casting down. ----------------------------------------------- SOUTHWIND Longways duple minor IMPROPER Southwind (flowing waltz) 16-bar A, 16-bar B, no repeats. 7/1/2010 - Radically revised 6/14/2011, words revised 10/16/2011. A: 1-4: Neighbors right hand turn 1x, launching women into 5-6: half-gypsy R finishing inside set line, facing neighbor 7-8: All chassee up or down to change places with partner while looking at neighbor, finish facing partner. 9-12: Partners left hand turn 1x, launching women into 13-14: half-gypsy L, finishing inside set line facing partner 15-16: All chassee up or down to change places with neighbor (to home place), while looking at partner, finish facing in. B: 1-4:right hand star 1x which leaves men facing out, partners behind them 5-8: "Dolphin Poussette": Partners lead individually the way they're facing cast right to face the other way lead individually into progressed place and women (now in lead) loop right while men continue forward to face in into 9-12: Partners gypsy right shoulder once round into 13-16: Partners two-hand turn once round and open to face new neighbors. Notes: You could also describe the women's half-gypsy as a "hole in the wall" cross but they may want to back out to the set line if you do that. Recommend demo as early part of instruction. The "dolphin poussette" is fairly hard to get across in words, but it does have that "dolphin hey" sense of changing leads. The paths are roughly parallel. Breakdown is something like this: 5: each lead three steps out; at end women are on the men's set line while men are well out from the set line) 6: both start right shoulder cast; man's, on the wider track, gets halfway to neighbor's place while woman's gets all the way 7: man finishes cast still well out from set line while woman crosses set to progressed place facing out 8: man takes three steps forward to set line while woman loops right through her place to face in. [When Joanna Reiner called this she just said "lead out, turn right about and lead in" and people got the general track but angularly.] ------------------------------------------------------------ SPRING THAW Waltz time duple longways 32-bar fairly brisk tempo, key F http://http://ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/~winston/mydances/apw/spring_thaw.pdf "Spring Thaw" by Patti Cobb This tune has a 16-bar A and a 16-bar B so it's played AB; the parts are clear. There's lot of time for the A action; be big.
