Interface Driven Functionalities in Complex oxide Heterostructures

Tuesday, February 9, 2021 - 3:00pm

Speaker:  Sanaz Koohfar, NCSU

Program Description:

Complex oxide heterostructures possess a wide range of properties such as superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. These properties can be tuned by manipulation of structural distortions at epitaxial interfaces between atomically thin complex oxides. In this talk, I present our research on uncovering spin interaction at La1-xSrxMnO3(LSMO)/La1-xSrxCrO3 heterointerfaces using a combination of atomic-scale synthesis, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and spectroscopy. We discover a ferromagnetic ground state in ultra-thin layers of LSMO and unfold the underlying mechanisms. Additionally, we observe an interface-driven exchange bias effect in La1-xSrxMnO3/La1-xSrxCrO3 related to Cr-Mn exchange. These novel phenomena pave the pathway for unique functionalities in spintronic applications.
