Photochemical reactions in solution studied by ultrafast (ps) X-ray scattering and XAS

Wednesday, May 6, 2015 - 3:00pm

Speaker: Qingyu Kong, Argonne National Laboratory

Program Description

The optical pump and X-ray probe setup at ID09B ESRF and ultrafast solution scattering on small molecules will be introduced, the photofragmentation reaction of Ru3(CO)12 in solution will be used as an example to show the complementary nature of ultrafast X-ray scattering and ultrafast optical spectroscopy in the determination of transient molecular structures and chemical reaction mechanisms. Example which is expected to be studied with fs X-ray scattering will be summarized. The time-resolved XAS beamline 11-ID-D at APS and X-ray transient absorption (XTA) studies on chemical reactions in solution will be presented as the second part of the talk.
