Harald Reichert, European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility is currently engaged in Phase I of an ambitious upgrade program (2009-2015) covering all aspects of the facility: photon production, experimental facilities for users, user service, and X-ray technology development. The upgrade has been designed around five scientific key drivers and benefits all areas of X-ray applications: Imaging, Spectroscopy, and Diffraction. Selected examples will be used to demonstrate first results of the ongoing upgrade.
In parallel we have started reflections on the technical and scientific case for Phase II of the upgrade program focusing on a major upgrade of the storage ring with a goal to reduce the horizontal emittance by a factor of 30. The associated increase in brilliance and coherence caters for new applications of X-rays in soft and hard condensed matter. Current planning aims for the realization of Phase II from 2015 to 2019.
