As in any synchrotron radiation facility, a large variety of potentially hazardous materials, processes and equipment can be present on the SSRL experimental floor. In addition to commonly accepted hazards, SSRL is in a high earthquake risk area.

Each person who works at SSRL is required to be familiar with the hazards associated with his/her work, and to properly implement all necessary procedures and protocols for mitigation of those hazards. Each person is required to observe all federal, state, local and SLAC/SSRL workplace safety regulations.

Each person, upon arrival at SSRL for the first time, must read the SSRL Safety Guidelines and sign an agreement to abide by the rules and regulations cited therein. Each person must attend a short Safety Orientation Meeting to discuss workplace safety, and complete a brief computer-based training module on site safety. These steps are arranged by contacting Daphne Mitchell in the User Research Administration office. (See "Arrival at SSRL" section for further details)

The proper use, storage and disposal of hazardous substances is critical to maintaining a healthful workplace and protecting the environment. All experimenters, especially Proposal Spokespersons, are responsible for informing the SSRL Safety Office of hazardous substances they wish to bring to SSRL, and to arrange for their proper storage and disposal. The Safety Office can arrange for storage and waste containers.

The following staff can assist with ES&H matters:

Children may enter SSRL experimental floor areas for brief guided tours only. No person may participate in any experimental activity at SSRL unless he/ she is a bonafide member of an experimental group and has read and signed the SSRL SAFETY AGREEMENT

Smoking is prohibited in all enclosed buildings and facilities. Smoking is permitted in outdoor areas away from doorways and ventilation systems.

No alcoholic beverages may be consumed or stored on the SSRL/SLAC site except when preapproved by the SLAC Director for special events.
