User Safety Advisory
As in any synchrotron radiation facility, a large variety of potentially hazardous materials, processes and equipment can be present on the SSRL experimental floor. In addition to commonly accepted hazards, SSRL is in a high earthquake risk area.
Each person who works at SSRL is required to be familiar with the hazards associated with his/her work, the hazards associated with work areas, and to properly implement all necessary procedures and protocols for mitigation of those hazards. Each person is required to observe all federal, state, local and SLAC/SSRL workplace safety regulations. See overview of doing work at SSRL and review the Integrated Safety & Environmental Management System (ISEMS).
Each person, before or upon arrival at SSRL, must read the SSRL Access Guidelines and sign an agreement to abide by the rules and regulations cited therein. Each person must attend a short Safety Talk (including hutch operation) and complete required safety training. Contact Jackie Kerlegan in the User Research Administration for more details on the check-in procedures (See also "Arrival at SSRL" section for additional information).
The proper use, storage and disposal of hazardous substances is critical to maintaining a healthful workplace and protecting the environment. All experimenters, especially Proposal Spokespersons, are responsible for informing the SSRL Safety Office of hazardous substances they wish to bring to SSRL, and to arrange for their proper storage and disposal. The SSRL Safety Office can arrange for storage and waste containers.
