Stanford Linear Accelerator Center

The SPPS, the world's highest brightness linac based hard x-ray source to date has provided both exciting scientific results and a test bed for critical technology to exploit x-ray free electron lasers. These achievements will be described as they provide a window on the opportunities and challenges of the LCLS. Attention will be focused on the challenges for optics and diagnostics crucial to fully exploiting the unique aspects of the LCLS.
