I've seen bits of Colin's ECD computer program up close and can say with confidence that this enhanced package should be very useful indeed. Sign me up!!! Some questions for Colin (I didn't see these answered on the web site): are you including the capability of printing dance cards on card stock? easily revising the dance directions as necessary and printing new cards for dances revised since the last time? As I recall, you had an included word processor and print utility specifically for dance cards, with some _great_ features (accomodation of multi-card instructions with eye-catching warning graphics, simple layouts, room for source/historical info), including this business of updating instructions based on experience with a crowd, then printing out just those cards from among thousands which had been updated since the last print run. Also, as nearly all of us have adopted some form of computer-based system (I use Excel), will there be a way of easily importing this data into your database? ASCII or Excel or... Please!!! As no doubt you (Colin) know, "no good deed goes unpunished." Your thanks from the dance community for releasing your terrific program will be endless requests for enhancements, complaints about bugs (wait!!! no bugs in Colin Hume programs, right?), and the inevitable, dreaded "support calls." Thanks! This past March at the English-American Dance and Music Weekend here in Urbana, IL one of the sessions was on the "Care and Feeding of Dance Groups". We had representatives from 10 dance groups in 5 states take part in the discussion, including some folks from the Heritage Music and Dance Society in the Milwaukee area. Whether or not we will hold a similar session next year I can't say, but attending some dance events, observing and asking questions of the organizers is one good way to get the feel for what is needed to start a group of your own. A few young dancers from southern Missouri attended our dance weekend in 2002, and then came back for our Playford Ball the following June. This gave them the inspiration to form their own dance group back home. They held their first ball this past May and had around 40 dancers attend. There are dance opportunities aplenty in Wisconsin so you should be able to find some people to give you advice and examples. I've been wondering about the printing facilities. I use my own Word Processor which is specifically designed for my printer (Canon LBP8) and wouldn't be any use to most people. I was planning to invoke Wordpad, MS Word or some other editor which handles Rich Text Format, but if enough people want the facility to print onto cards I can incorporate this feature. Avery produce Index Cards - letter-size micro-perforated sheets containing three 3" x 5" cards (Product Code 5388 or 8388). I don't know whether these are available in England, and I don't imagine they are available in A4 size, so I feed them through my printer manually. >Also, as nearly all of us have adopted some form of computer-based system >(I use Excel), will there be a way of easily importing this data into >your database? ASCII or Excel or... Please!!! Two other people have asked me about this. Again, I can add an import facility if enough people want it. I imagine any reasonable spread-sheet or database can export a table in comma-delimited format (CSV) so I'll go for that. I can import dances into the Dances table and Events into the Events table, but I don't think I'll be able to link the two together automatically - you will have to run the Dance Organiser and give the titles of the dances called at each event. So far 13 people have expressed an interest in trying the program. I need 30 before it's worth my while adding the necessary additional code and Help screens - so tell all your calling friends to email me if they're interested! Hi Alan, The Harwood Avenue Callers' Library is at your service. I'll send you specific directions from Potters' Porch off-list. Mr. Foster's Frolic is a cheerful triad mixer, starting with the Ones dancing as a unit in heys for 3, in A1 with the men, in A2 with the women. B1 has a Fenterlarick variant involving a line of 6; B2 is pretty much filler. I think it would work as a party dance. The Temple has member conflicts for April 17 and April 3, which was our fall back date. At the moment, it seems we have two alternatives: find another venue (EGADS!) or find another date. It looks like May 15 might work, but that's also contingent on their member needs. I wish it were plans to celebrate "the book" which seems to have come to a complete standstill. It's been a rough summer for me, compounded with the distinct possibility of my moving to a co-op this fall (also in the works, so keep that under your hat, too. Good thing you're wearing one with a big brim. . . .) So anyway, that's what's happening. How's your summer going?! I haven't forgotten that we've promised each other a tea date at some point. . . . --O. _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 13:23:54 PST Sender: owner-ecd-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 20:23:29 +0000 From: Orly Krasner Reply-To: ECD-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Subject: Open mouth, insert foot To: ECD-AT-SSRL04.SLAC.STANFORD.EDU Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT When I goof, I goof BIG! We try hard not to conflict with other Playford balls, so it would be helpful to know when the Hartford Ball is. My appologies if this is entirely off topic. I'm not sure where else to look for an answer. A question has arisen from a summer music course here at Hofstra University where I work in the Music Dept. Library. Is "Dargason" only used as the name of the ECD tune and dance? Checking the resources on hand has only served to further muddy the search. The search has become one of those things that when you start investigating, you end up with more questions, and no real answers. Hence my post to this list. The definition in Grove seems to imply that dargason might be any circular tune, of any length. The definition begins, "An eight bar circular tune...." Were it to read, "The eight bar circular tune....", there would be no question. It is interesting to note that the Oxford English Dictionary does not have a listing for dargason. So, are any of you aware of a musical reference with dargason used in a way other than as the name of the dance? Thank you for any light you might be able to shed on this question. Here's the definition from the Oxford Dictionary of Music, 1985 edition: Eng. folk-tune, used from the 16th century onwards for a country dance. Also used for the folk-song "It was a maid of my country." Holst, in his "Suite No. 2" for military band (1911), combines the Dargason with "Greensleeves" in the finale, later transposing the movt. for strings in his "St Paul's Suite" (1912-3). This sounds pretty much like a definition of a proper noun to me. If you took the first two sentences alone, I suppose it would be possible to interpret this as meaning "ANY English folk tune which was both used from the 16th century onwards for a country dance and which was used as the tune for 'It was a maid of my country.'" However, the Holst reference seems to suggest that "Dargason" is the name of the specific tune Holst used in the cited pieces. I grant you that the phrase "the Dargason" is a little odd if Dargason is just the name of the tune -- like, why wouldn't they say "combines the Dargason with the Greensleeves"? But it seems like if "Dargason" were a generic term for a class of tunes, they'd have said "a Dargason." -- Jon Berger http://pages.sbcglobal.net/jberger ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 11:07:30 PST Sender: owner-ecd-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 11:07:23 -0700 (PDT) From: Tom Vincent Subject: Re: ECD group in Atlanta To: ECD-AT-SSRL04.SLAC.STANFORD.EDU Reply-To: ECD-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Message-ID: <20030731180723.77298.qmail-AT-web12205.mail.yahoo.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT Check the list at www.cdss.org. --- Bill McDonald wrote: > Looking for ECD groups in either the Atlanta (GA) or > Birmingham (AL) areas. It's used for "The Shropshire Wakes, or Hey for Christmas," a late 17th century broadside ballad in the Bodleian Library which was recorded by the Baltimore Consort, and there's also at least one solo lute setting in Cambridge U Library MS Dd 2.11. From my limited experience, I'd say "Dargason" referred to a specific tune, not a class of tunes.
