Tuesday, Jan. 18 This being the day appointed to be kept as her Majesty’s birth day, the usual rejoicings were observed. The morning was ushered in with ringing of bells, and the flags were hoisted on the steeples, and at one o’clock the Park and Tower guns were fired. There was a levee and a drawing-room at which the great officers of state, foreign ministers, and the nobility, &c. were present. The Princess Royal received the compliments of the Nobility yesterday in her own apartment, in honour of her Majesty’s birth day.The Prince of Wales and Bishop of Osnaburgh were at the drawing-room. There will be no drawing-room to-morrow. Count Weldren, the Dutch Ambassador, and the Countess were at St. James this day. The ladies dresses were mostly sattin, fancifully ornamented with foil, gauze, and flowers. Lady Augusta Campbell, the Duchess of Rutland, and the Burrells, were most distinguished. - Lady Taylor appeared in a magnificent dress of white and gold, and blue foils, richly trimmed with crape, and embroidered with gold, and blue foils and tassels of gold and silver; and her head was superbly ornamented with diamonds. The gentlemen most remarkable for dress were, the Lords Carlisle and Cholmondeley, and Mr. Thomas Onslow. The King, as usual on her Majesty’s birth day, was most superbly cloathed in a brown-coloured velvet, embroidered with gold and foil, and a vast profusion of diamonds. The Queen, according to custom, was dressed plain. Their Majesties came into the ball room last night soon after nine o’clock, and after paying compliments to the Foreign Ministers, and the Nobility round the circle, the minuets began. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, and her Grace the Duchess of Athol, opened the ball; about half a score minuets were danced, which were succeeded by country dances and cotillions. Their Majesties left the ball room soon after eleven. ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Mon, 03 Feb 2003 21:31:30 PST Sender: owner-ecd-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Date: Mon, 03 Feb 2003 21:31:39 -0800 From: Alan Ackerman Reply-To: ECD-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Subject: Re: How the upper crust danced To: ECD-AT-PLAYFORD.SLAC.STANFORD.EDU Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT References: <3E3F24C3.86427C84-AT-AmericanRevolution.org> >From the Norfolk Chronicle, Saturday, January 22, 1780 >Cholmondeley I always like that name. The room is at the Birches Motel about 3 mi. north of the convention center. The rate is $65/night + tax for up to two people and the room has two beds. I will have to pay a one night penalty if I can't find someone who wants the room. --Peter Olszowka olszowka-AT-sophia2.somerville.ma.us ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Thu, 06 Feb 2003 15:38:33 PST Sender: owner-ecd-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Date: Thu, 06 Feb 2003 22:45:32 +0000 From: Orly Krasner Reply-To: ECD-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Subject: NY Playford Ball To: ECD-AT-PLAYFORD.SLAC.STANFORD.EDU BCC: Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT Greetings One and All! Where can I access (buy or see online - I'm writing from Australia so can't pop into libraries in the U.S. or U.K.) originals of the 'Apted' / Thompson dances/tunes - A Trip to Highgate, Mutual Love, The Flight, Comical Fellow, The Happy Captive, The Dusky Night, Pleasures of the Town, The Fair Maid of the Inn, Barley Mow, Linnen Hall, Lasses of Portsmouth? I have modern versions but would really like to see the originals and unfortunately these are from sources beyond the scope of Robert Keller's wonderful on-line Dancing Master compendium and do not appear (though some Thompson dances do) in that other good source of orginals, The Playford Ball. 2. Where can I access a copy of Thomas Wilson's The Correct Method of German and French Waltzing (London, 1817)? Although some of Wilson's Country Dancing manuals are accessible on-line via the American Library of Congresses Ballroom Companion site (and some other sites), and although one particular illustration from this Waltz manual is frequently reproduced, I've not been able to find the text for this manual anywhere. 3. Does anyone have any idea what the dance and tune are which follow Shrewsbury Lasses (but precedes Mr Beveridges' Maggot) in the BBC dramatisation of Pride&Prejudice (I've worked out all the other dances in the film series)? 4. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to best dance La Boulangere, the French import popular in Regency time? I have one original description saying start as in a cotillion (suggesting an even number of couples), chain around then 1W gives right hand to her corner and left hand back to her partner to start the 'stripping' of the circle. I would have thought, however, with an even number of couples it would be more natural for the 1st Woman to go from the chain to the stripping giving right hand to her partner (again), then left hand to person of opposite sex etc (just as we strip in The Baker's Wife in Australia today). How do you all do it (e.g. with which hand and in which direction do you start the grand chain and the stripping)? Any links? 5. Has anyone considered doing the Duke of Kent's Waltz (1801) in the following fashion (with minimum changing of hands) - right hand star, left hand star, but then (instead of changing to 2 hand open hold as often prescibed) come out of the left hand star with 1s l.h. in l.h., joining r.hs over the top and in this skater's promenade hold 'lead down the middle' (with 4 waltz steps - not 2 chasses), switch about and 'up again' (with 4 waltz steps), and don't caste (the original does not say to) but to raise hands into a high over-the-shoulder promenade hold and 'allemande' into 2nd place in the way Scotts do today (i.e. caste as a couple in the coures of the allemande and not treat the allemand as a non-progressing balance and twirl on alternate hands as often prescibed and as pleasant as this may be), then 1s release l.hs but retain r.hs long enough to pull past each other to start the 'swing corners' passing partner by right shoulder and giving l.h. to corner (as a contra dancer might do, not giving r.h. to corner as often prescribed for this dance), and return to turn partner into place with r.h. (not l.h.) ready to slide straight into a r.h. star with a new couple below? Any thoughts? Better stop there! We'll be doing some concert performances and some Masses in Orvieto, Perugia, Siena, and Rome. I'm leaving Wednesday. I'll be thinking fondly of all of you, but I won't be there. And that goes for my Veggie Chili on the landing upstairs at the Music Hall as well. See you next year. ______ /\/\/\/\ <______> | | | | | David Barnert <______> | | | | | <______> | | | | | Albany, N.Y. <______> \/\/\/\/ Ventilator Concertina Bellows Bellows (Vocation) (Avocation) ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Fri, 07 Feb 2003 08:31:26 PST Sender: owner-ecd-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Date: Fri, 07 Feb 2003 08:31:07 -0800 (PST) From: Benjamin Stein Reply-To: ECD-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Subject: Re: NY Playford Ball To: ECD-AT-PLAYFORD.SLAC.STANFORD.EDU Message-ID: <20030207163107.77063.qmail-AT-web41504.mail.yahoo.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT --- Orly Krasner wrote: > Greetings One and All! > > It gives me great pleasure to announce Country Dance > * New York's 20th > Annual Playford Ball, to be held in its usual location on > Saturday, April 5, > 2003. As usual, we've asked our leaders to produce a program celebrating the romantic dances of our repertoire. Whenever I work on this dance, it's always fun to think of the possibilities--St. Margaret's Hill, The Old Mill, Easter Thursday, Turning by Threes, Rafe's Waltz, Astoria Lass, Heidenroslein, Quite Carried Away--each carrying special memories of special partners. If you're within driving distance of Boston, you're likely facing a bitterly cold week, So, bring your memories, enjoy our decorations, refreshments, and company and together we'll light a fire against the cold. Alan Winston will lead romantic and flirtatious, mostly waltz-time, country dances in the first part of the evening. About 9:00 pm, vintage dance instructor Stan Isaacs will teach authentic Regency waltz from Mr. Wilson's manual. (The country dances are in modern ECD style; Regency footwork is admired when seen, but not taught at parties.) No partner required, of course. And Regency waltz is extremely symmetrical, so learning one sex's part is an advantage in learning the other, not a drawback. St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 600 Colorado Avenue (a block and a half West of Middlefield Road). Dancing starts at 8:00 for sure; doors open 7:30 and we sometimes start earlier if band and dancers want to. Subscription $5; bring a Valentine treat to share! You may know it as a big contra dance weekend blowout, and it definitely is. But the program also offers a complete weekend of English country dancing. Headlining the English country program are Scott Higgs from Philadelphia, Joseph Pimentel from Columbus, and a band called Goldcrest. I think the band made the name up for this occasion, so it's not a household word, but the musicians - Dave Weisler, Paul Oorts and Daron Douglas - are absolutely wonderful. As a band they've won nothing but raves from dancers, so we're planning on a big helping of beautiful musicianship, eclectic improvisation, and vibrant spirit to create a memorable dance experience. In addition to Goldcrest, great Michigan bands Perfect Match and Dr. Grangelove also play for ECD sessions. This year's program offers English country dance sessions showcasing a variety of great performers all weekend: Friday night from 8 - 11 pm; Saturday afternoon from 1:30 - 4 pm; Saturday evening from 7 - 10 pm; and Sunday afternoon from 11:30 am - 1:15pm. Three of the four time blocks include a session marked as "advanced." And when you're not doing English country dancing, there are lots of opportunities to enjoy Scottish, Scandinavian, and international dancing, musicians' and singers' workshops, as well as all the high-energy contras you'd expect. You can preregister for the whole weekend for $58. Preregistrations can be for the weekend or for any combination of segments, and need to be received by February 21. If you need a place to stay, call 734-994-5494 before February 15 and leave a message with all the pertinent information (how many people, how to contact you by phone and email). The website has the complete schedule, performer bios, accommodations info, and a registration form: http://www.aadawndance.org If you don't preregister, you can always come and pay at the door, but it costs more. Plus we'd love to know you're coming. Feel free to call with questions 734-665-7704 or email me or rbantle-AT-htdconnect.com. We did 27 dances (JTC twice-afternoon and evening). The outfits were great, the sit-ins enthusiastic, and the harpsichord sounding brighter than in previous years made Mad Robin sound its best. Lloyd (who built the harpsichord) did something to help the sound project and although he claimed the Ab was a problem I never heard it. Thanks to Flo we had a wonderful potluck supper between the sessions and refreshments in the mid-evening. Here is the list of dances done. 3-6: Daphne Parson's Farewell Alchurch The Valiant Captain (The Gun) Well Hall Jack's Health Nonesuch (for as many as will) Blew Britches (for as many as will) John Talis' Cannon Fair Quaker of Deal Hunsdon House Indian Queen Greensleeves and Yellow Lace 8-11: The Fine Companion Fandango Grimstock Slaughter House Mr. Isaac's Maggot The Joy of Dance Dargason Buckingham House Mr. Lane's Maggot Chelmsford Assembly Saint Margaret's Hill Hambleton's Round O The Mulberry Garden John Talis' Cannon (again) Cammy ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Fri, 14 Feb 2003 14:19:40 PST Sender: owner-ecd-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Date: Fri, 14 Feb 2003 17:19:25 -0500 From: Campbell Kaynor Reply-To: ECD-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Subject: Happy Valentines Day - a little off topic, but To: ECD-AT-PLAYFORD.SLAC.STANFORD.EDU Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT I feel I have gotten to know many of you over the past year so you are now victims of my incurable romanticism. Cammy To Carrie and all the others, This year I ended up with a whole slew of good ideas that will make great poems some other day. Only one of them seemed to gather shape over lunch so here it is: Centerpiece(s) Have you ever tried to taste the moonlight - The faintest hint of sweet? Have you ever tried to feel the grass grow Underneath your feet? Have you ever tried to catch the smell Of snowflakes as they fall? If you haven't done such simple things You haven't lived at all! Have you ever watched a drooping Bulrush Barely touch the snow, And as the breezes catch the leaf Twisting to and fro? You watch it etch a perfect arc As if it wished to say That nothing is as precious as This very perfect day. I love these things just as they are And all the other stuff, Yet since I met you, loving things Is never quite enough. They set the scene, frame the view and I love them all the more Because there is a centerpiece That I am yearning for. CK, 2/14/03 If you were not in on this tradition in years past, below are a few: 2001 To whom it may concern, On this Valentine's day, I am thinking about how grateful I am for all of the people and things that I love in this life. Being a romantic through and through, there is an element of romance in my relationship with all things - even the boiling of maple sap on the grill on a cold Feb night under the stars. I haven't the time to create appropriate art for each of you, so I have devoted my energy to a single poem that I have addressed to my wife, Carrie, "and all the others". Believe me when I say that my thoughts turned to each of you in its crafting. I hope you enjoy. PS. I did see my first Robin of the spring yesterday. You are my Valentine What emotion from above, Is it love? A passing whisper of romance In the stars, A delicious savoring From afar. Or a noisy passion arises Strictly bridled To torment my soul, devastate, Debilitate With helpless longing I flounder In pools of lust. In the dust I saw a robin today Cold, hungry, eager. His bright eye caught mine Tugging at my heart. The sweet steam of early sap Rises on the wind - is it love? CK (2/13/01) 2002 Last night near midnight, over roast chicken and the BBC, I scratched a few lines that are a feeble attempt to acknowledge what you all do for my life. Once again I must apologize for the fact that I am sending a single creation to the multitude of people I love. This modest attempt to express the depth of feeling and appreciation I have for each of you, falls far short of the real thing. I can only beg forgiveness for what it lacks in inspiration and creative skill, and hope that the intent and the sentiments are clear. Considering how distraught I am at the state of the world, the unending cycles of violence and death and my dismay at my role as an American, it is by virtue of my unquenchable romantic nature and your very existence that I can face the future with some modicum of joy. Believe me when I say that my thoughts turned to each of you as I wrote these lines and I hope you enjoy them. Nothing but the Words (to Carrie and all the others) The lyrics are nothing but the words, The melody holds nought but the tune, Yet when I sing of you, my love The words and song are one. Flowers exude attractive scents, Their colors catch our eye, Yet cannot compare with you, my dear As hard as they may try. If all the things I love on earth, Were assembled in one place, They would not move my heart so much As gazing on your face. So make me happy, share a kiss, And dance with me 'till dawn, And let my lust for you, my love Go on and on and on. CK, 2/13/02 My love to you all, Cammy ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Fri, 14 Feb 2003 16:02:49 PST Sender: owner-ecd-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Date: Fri, 14 Feb 2003 19:02:18 -0500 (EST) From: SallenNic-AT-aol.com Reply-To: ECD-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Subject: No Subject To: ecd-AT-PLAYFORD.SLAC.STANFORD.EDU Message-ID: <30.38944cda.2b7edd8a-AT-aol.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT Just two months till The Assembly (Edinburgh) Workshop Weekend on April 12/13. What's really great now is that I can rely on graduates of former lesson series to act as 'dance angels' to beginners. I'm going to need all of them this time as I expect to have a class of 20+ beginners. As I'm not totally satisfied with how I've been teaching heys for 3 and heys for 4, I'm hoping people will share their thoughts and successful techniques with me on this topic. For any who are interested in having/collecting dances for beginners, I have recently made some improvements to 2 dances I wrote for beginners , 'Newcastle Circle' and 'Farewell to Marian Again'. Let me know if you want copies. Although these dances were written to introduce certain figures to beginners, I think they also work well as easy dances for a general dance audience. thanks in advance, Don Bell p.s. my thanks to all who have been involved in creating/producing 'danceable' ECD CDs, as these recordings are the main music for my dance lesson series. I've also found the high quality of music on the CDs inspiring to new dancers. ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 21:36:33 PST Sender: owner-ecd-AT-playford.slac.stanford.edu Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 23:39:41 -0500 From: "Dawn C. I find it helps to tell people to remember that when they do a hey, they're constantly going to be passing in between two people. It also helps to break the movements down step by step. In particular, where does the first step go? I've always felt awkward doing this move, and I'm wondering if that's because I've been taking the first step directly in front of me. That means I don't get much rotation on that step. Getting around would be much easier if I instead took the first step out to the right a bit, and continued in that direction for the second step, so that the trajectory of my center of gravity (as projected on the floor) was more like a cycloid than like a straight line. Does this make sense, and if so, how is it with *your* c.g.? All advice welcome. Some dancers have problems turning in the correct direction at the ends and coming back in to the set with the correct shoulder. One method I've found that works for any length Hey is to have the dancers go around an imaginary pole as they come out of the set. If they do that they will automatically turn correctly, come back in with the correct shoulder and be on time. I hope this helps. The hey for 3 is usually fairly easy for new dancers to grasp. It really is a figure 8 (unlike the hey for 4 which is sometimes referred to as a figure 8, but isn't really). The head person passes between the other 2 and loops one direction (depending on the hey) at the foot of the set, the other 2 follow and loop the other direction at the head of the set. One way I was shown to teach a hey for 4 is to start with a ladies chain (over and back). Emphasise that the dancers should pay close attention to the path the ladies take. Do that a couple of times. Then have the women walk that path without taking hands in the middle or interacting with the men on the sides. Then have the men walk the path with the women standing at the sides. Now put it together with the women starting and the men following, and "hey presto" you have a hey for 4. This is one of my favorite figures and dances. I personally don't begin the turn until after the first step, making the turn itself a faster, more dramatic turn. That also enables one to come forward a longer distance, and enables one to fall back further at the start of the figure. This of course assumes one has room to fall back a ways; you can adjust that to fit the room and the set. Without room you almost have to a short fall back and a turn single in place. When I first read this discription, I thought, "You still have knees." For those of us whose knees seem to have a horizontal rotation component that hurts, start turning on that first step and don't try to make any of the pats of the turn too dramatic. Other clues for the novice might be, "Keep turning to the right (or left)", or suggest that hands *be* used at first to acclimate the beginner. (When reversing directions, of course it becomes "left, right..." For straight heys, do emphasize the need for a generous loop at the ends, perhaps giving a little demo of good vs bad. Anxious beginners always rush back and crash into someone. The demo could also deal with the tendency of beginners to turn the wrong way at the ends.
