Richard was a classically-trained violinist who became a first-rate fiddle player, and Blue Mountain Band have been on the scene in England much longer than I've been dancing. They are known particularly for their American-style music, and often played for the London Barndance Company at Cecil Sharp House. I believe they played in the States a couple of years ago. I remember calling a Playford Ball with them a few years ago, and afterwards several people came up to them and said "I didn't realise you could play like that!" - it's so easy to pigeon-hole people. Richard leaves a wife (Madeleine, an excellent caller) and two young sons. You can find these lists at http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~j-sivier/contra/good_dancers.html and http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~j-sivier/contra/tips.html (I can email anyone a copy of these lists if you don't have web access, but I thought I would avoid undue clutter on the mailing list by not posting them). These were written with contra dance in mind and I thought that it might be useful to have similar lists for ECD. Some of the items might be applicable, but others might not. Also there probably are specific tips that pertain to ECD and not to contra or other dance forms. Let me know of any items on the lists that, as they are or with a small change, can be listed for ECD or any additional tips that you can think of. Also does anyone have any ideas/tips for improving the quality of dancing of a dance group as a whole? I look forward to hearing any ideas. Thanks. At least on Monday and Tuesday. A little poking around the NEFFA linkfest (www.neffa.org/~neffa/TOP/index.html) reveals that there's a contradance every Wednesday night and an English Country Dance on the third Sunday of the month. The same resource gets us to Mark Gaines' Chicago region dance page, at www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/6723/chicago.htm which lists the Abbey Road Pub Mike already knows about, suggests his visit falls midway between two Wednesday night English dances (11/11 and 11/25), and shows on 11/21 "Tom Senior with French Roast at Evanston, family dance at 6:45, regular dance starts at 8:00." I'd strongly suggest Michael go poke around that page, which lists a bunch of Chicago-region dances, contra, ECD, cajun, and swing. -- Alan =============================================================================== Alan Winston --- WINSTON-AT- SSRL.SLAC.STANFORD.EDU Disclaimer: I speak only for myself, not SLAC or SSRL Phone: 650/926-3056 Physical mail to: SSRL -- SLAC BIN 69, PO BOX 4349, STANFORD, CA 94309-0210 =============================================================================== ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Mon, 09 Nov 1998 22:40:26 PST Sender: owner-ecd-AT- playford.slac.stanford.edu Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 01:41:13 -0500 (EST) From: Sharon Green Reply-To: ECD-AT- playford.slac.stanford.edu Subject: Caller Compensation To: ECD-AT- SSRL04.SLAC.STANFORD.EDU Message-ID: <199811100641.BAA20311-AT- mail1.panix.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT I'd be very interested in getting a sense of how caller compensation for leading special events (especially Playford balls) varies throughout the US. Please feel free to respond off-list. I can't tell you about fees for ECD leaders. Our group is relatively new (and thus poor) and we haven't yet reached the point of being able to pay anyone. However the local contra group has set fees of $25 for local callers and $50 for out-of-town callers. However this is negotiable and $100 is not unusual for a caller at a special event. This is also my experience as a caller, $50 to $100 seems to be the going rate, though I have gotten a bit more at special events. Many groups pay a set fee with a bonus if attendance is sufficiently good. That, is once the groups costs (hall rental and other overhead costs) are met, any excess is split with the band and caller. I hope this is helpful. In Boston, for our Playford Ball which has an afternoon workshop as well as an evening dance, the afternoon leaders get $40 apiece for splitting the session while the evening leader gets $60. However, if we import a star, stipends are higher. A couple of years ago, for a three event weekend (Friday night dance, Saturday workshop, Saturday Dance) the stipend was $200 for the out of town leader. Usually our Friday night leaders don't get anything, and often stipends for special events like the Fall Favorites are $0. (We are fortunate to have a leader with a very strong sense of noblesse oblige.) The basic problem is that if you try to keep stipends somewhat in line with revenues, you don't have much to pay leaders in a regular series event, after paying rent and the musicians. However for out of town guests we try to do better, often resulting in higher ticket prices. With this as background, $100 seems fine as a stipend for an out of town leader for an event like a Playford Ball. The aim was to build a dance series featuring accessible and interesting dances from the English and American country dance programme. This initiative seemed to work from the start on. Interested dancers from all parts of Flanders and also from the Netherlands showed up. And that interest is still well alive after ten years! So it was felt that this jubilee should be celebrated with a whole day of dancing, featuring a programme of English country dances for the occasion. The band The Little Tinkers will provide music all day long. During the morning workshop Philippe Callens will introduce you to some unhackneyed English dances and work on good dance technique. For the afternoon ball a choice will be made from this next selection of dances so that teaching time will be short: Barbarini's Tambourine Bellamira Dunham Oaks Freeford Gardens Handel with Care Kill him with Kindness Maiden Lane Maiden Moor Mr. Isaac's Maggot Newcastle Trip to Amsterdam Trip to Paris Wa'Is Me Walpole Cottage Wibsey Roundabout Winter Dreams Waltz Wood Duck Young Widow Although it is possible to attend only either workshop or afternoon dance, we invite you to participate all day long. One side then gets to whirl around to set and turn single, and one side gets to do a turn and a half for the next part toward the right wall. Please respond directly to him at hmorgens-AT- nmc.edu To be held August 15 - 21st 1999 in Traverse City, Michigan, USA. The camp starts with a dance on Sunday Evening and ends with the dance on the following Friday evening. The Camp consists of day-time Workshops & evening Dances featuring Contras, Squares, English Country Dance, Tangos, Waltzes and International Dance. Location & Venue Traverse City, a popular tourist resort, lies on the southern shores of Grand Traverse Bay near the north end of Lake Michigan. The area is renowned for its canoeing, hiking, fishing and winter skiing. The campus of Northwestern Michigan College provides an idyllic setting for the 'Between the Bays' dance camp. The College is located on an 80 acre site approx 1 miles east of Downtown Traverse City at the southern end of a peninsula projecting into Grand Traverse Bay. The campus is set in a pine forest with sandy beaches within walking distance to both east and west. Accommodation and meals will be provided on the campus. Accommodation is provided in single (limited nos.) & twin rooms with two twin rooms sharing a bathroom. Costs The cost of the dance camp--and this includes EVERYTHING (workshops, dances, food & lodging)--will be $430 per person, double occupancy sharing bathroom with another double.. Rooms have been reserved at the college for the Friday & Saturday night before the dance camp starts & also for the Saturday night after the camp ends. No food will be offered for these extra days/nights (there are tons of fast food--and high quality--restaurants nearby). The rooms will cost $45 per night (i.e. a room for two people). Local Environs A comment from the Director Henry Morgenstein: 'I do recommend that people arrive early, not so much because of jet lag but because this is a beautiful resort town. As a relative of mine observed to me once "Traverse City is on the way to nowhere."--that was in response to "well, on your way from here to there, you might stop off in Traverse City'. Traverse City is on the way to nowhere--but once you travel 250 miles south you are in the "middle" of America. He's sent it to me, with permission to forward, here it is -- this is the same program that will be done at Cecil Sharp House on Saturday, the 5th of December. It makes, I think, an interesting comparison with Beverly Francis's program. [I only recognize 40% of the dances here.] -- Alan ================= THE ASSEMBLY BALL - EDINBURGH -July 4th, 1998.
